Affixes

Six families that define every strong build

Last updated:

Affixes are the grammar of Pass the Fear’s build language. Short tags and effect lines printed on weapons and parts, some relics, and occasional event rewards, they tell you whether a piece belongs in a Fireworks Master trajectory stack, a One-Shot Nuke burst rotation, or a Dual Element status loop. Six families dominate island loot: Fragment, Growth, Final Shot, Disruption, Embarkation, and Shatter. Master these six and random drops stop looking random.

Read Build Basics for slot math; return here when a tooltip mentions an affix you do not recognize.

Fragment

Fragment splits, forks, or spawns additional projectiles when conditions trigger — on kill, on crit, on first hit, or on room entry depending on the roll. Fragment is the engine of Fireworks Master: each fragment can proc on-hit relics independently, multiplying damage and status application beyond what trajectory barrels alone provide.

Fragment pairs with high trajectory count and on-hit relics. It conflicts with pure Final Shot primaries that want one hit, not twelve small ones. Hybrid note: Fragment on a secondary clear weapon while your primary runs nuke is a common compromise.

Shopping tip: Fragment-affix barrels often outvalue generic damage parts for fireworks routes — see weapons and parts priority lists.

Growth

Growth scales damage, stats, or stack counts over time — per second charging, per kill, per room, or per status applied. Growth rewards patience and safe positioning. It anchors One-Shot Nuke when paired with charge weapons: you wind up while dodging, release on Final Shot with a tall Growth stack, and delete a boss phase.

Growth also supports long Dual Element boss fights where burn ticks need amplification over thirty seconds. It underperforms on speed-run clears where you skip rooms — match Growth investment to your pacing.

Relic synergy: Growth-tagged relics that extend stack caps or reduce stack decay are capstone pickups — hunt them in relics once your weapon affixes are set.

Final Shot

Final Shot enhances the last bullet in a magazine, the terminal frame of a charge attack, or the closing hit of a combo string — bonus damage, crit, explosions, or spawned effects depending on version. Final Shot defines One-Shot Nuke identity. Multiple Final Shot sources may stack additively or overwrite — test on elites when you duplicate the affix.

Final Shot on primary plus Fragment secondary is a standard boss/add split. Final Shot plus Growth on the same charge weapon is the classic nuke loop. Avoid stacking Final Shot on multi-projectile primaries where “last bullet” still means dozens of pellets.

Magazine size matters: small magazines cycle Final Shot more often; large magazines hold bigger per-shot bonuses on some rolls. Mod parts in weapons and parts interact directly.

Disruption

Disruption applies crowd control — stagger, slow, interrupt, or armor crack — often on hit or on status apply. Disruption keeps elites inside your damage windows long enough for Growth stacks and Dual Element overlap to matter. Pure DPS builds ignore Disruption and wonder why bosses walk out of their nuke charge.

Disruption pairs with Shatter when Disruption rolls include armor break setup. Co-op teams assign Disruption-heavy relics to the player with best positioning discipline.

Fireworks Master benefits from Disruption that procs per hit — another reason trajectory count matters beyond raw damage.

Embarkation

Embarkation triggers on run start, room entry, or phase transitions — granting buffs, shields, free shots, or resource spikes at the moment you cross a threshold. Embarkation is tempo glue: it front-loads power when you enter boss arenas or elite gauntlets.

Embarkation shines on aggressive clear routes that chain rooms without long setup. It helps nuke builds open bosses with pre-stacked buffs before Growth finishes winding. It is less valuable on slow loot-heavy routes unless tarot from tarot cards also rewards room-speed.

Do not confuse Embarkation with Fragment room-entry splits — read the exact trigger phrase on each piece.

Shatter

Shatter bursts damage when targets break armor, exit freeze, or combine specific status pairs — the payoff affix for Dual Element and a finisher for frost-adjacent nuke tech. Shatter without setup is a dead affix: you need teammates or weapon tags applying freeze, break, or dual status first.

Fire plus frost overlap into Shatter is the community-standard Dual Element loop — burn lowers resistance, freeze locks, Shatter spikes. Disruption that extends freeze duration directly feeds Shatter windows.

Shatter-tagged relics often carry the highest burst multipliers in the game — protect them during inventory swaps per relics guide advice.

Combining affixes — rules of thumb

Strong builds commit to two or three affix lines, not all six. Example triangles:

  • Fireworks: Fragment + Disruption + optional Growth
  • Nuke: Final Shot + Growth + optional Shatter finisher
  • Dual Element: Shatter + Disruption + Growth on burn

Spreading across Fragment, Final Shot, and Shatter on one primary weapon dilutes triggers — each affix fires less often because your fire mode satisfies none of them cleanly.

Where affixes appear

Weapons roll affixes at drop. Parts add or override affix tags when attached. Relics sometimes carry affix language that stacks with gear — “Fragment on kill” on a relic plus Fragment on barrel is multiplicative when kills happen inside the same room window.

Tarot cards generally do not print affix tags but may boost affix-related outcomes — projectile count, charge speed, status duration — treat tarot as affix enablers, not affix replacements.

Reading tooltips under pressure

During a run, scan for the affix keyword first, numeric bonus second. A plus-eight-percent damage line without an affix tag loses to a plus-three-percent line with Fragment when you are building Fireworks Master. The build pages list priority orders; this page defines the vocabulary.

Affixes turn Pass the Fear from “equip higher number” into “equip correct grammar.” Learn Fragment, Growth, Final Shot, Disruption, Embarkation, and Shatter once — every future drop reads like a sentence instead of noise.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What are the six main affix families?

Fragment, Growth, Final Shot, Disruption, Embarkation, and Shatter. They appear on weapons, parts, and some relics, and define which build routes a piece supports.

Which affix is best for Fireworks Master?

Fragment is the keystone — it spawns or splits additional projectiles. Disruption helps per-hit stagger on high trajectory counts; avoid prioritizing Final Shot on your primary.

How do Growth and Final Shot work together?

Growth stacks damage over time while you charge or fight; Final Shot releases that stack on the last bullet or charge frame. Together they form the core One-Shot Nuke loop.

What does Shatter require to trigger?

Shatter needs setup — armor break, freeze exit, or specific dual-status overlap depending on the roll. Dual Element builds use fire plus frost to create reliable Shatter windows.

Can one weapon have all six affixes?

Technically multiple affixes can appear, but strong builds commit to two or three lines. Spreading across all six dilutes triggers and leaves you mediocre at every archetype.

Do affixes on parts stack with relics?

Yes when tags align — Fragment on a barrel plus Fragment on a relic multiplies splits and procs. Mismatched tags waste slots; read both tooltips before swapping.
